5,000 km in 8 days. It was a long drive, but well worth it to photograph this wedding. John is a snowboarding fanatic while Megan prefers the skiing side of things, but this minor difference didn’t stop them from tying the knot up at the Flying Dog Ranch in Carbondale, Colorado. Having spent most of my last 10 years in the flat, flat prairies, it was a revelation shooting up in these beautiful hills with mountains all around. Between the majestic scenery, the wonderfully flowered and landscaped ranch, and the vibrant and fun-loving couple, the hardest part was trying to decide what to take pictures of.
I’ve seen my fair share of ceremonies, but I think this one took the record for shortest one yet. The meal was also notable in that it was fantastic. Megan and John wanted a grand ol’ party for their wedding, and judging by the stories, laughter, and dancing that took place all afternoon and evening, it seemed like everyone was having as good a time as they were. From stopping ice cream trucks to climbing light poles in the Exchange, there was always something spontaneous to shoot during Amber & Andrew’s wedding! Between the expressiveness of the wedding party to the beautiful sunny summer day, it was a fun and easy wedding shoot, culminating in a picturesque outdoor ceremony out at Breezy Bend Country Club. Congratulations Amber & Andrew – hope you enjoyed your time away in the sunny Carribbean!
Colorado and back in 8 days was a little on the hectic side – that was a lot more power driving than I’ve done in a long time. That said, we still managed to squeeze in a good day of hiking before we left, as well as passing through the Black Hills and the Badlands on the way home. This trip helped remind me how much I enjoy road tripping (at least when there’s more time to enjoy it). At the end though, I think everyone was very happy to come home to the comfort and familiarity of our own beds.
And now back to the crazy summer schedule! But first, a few more pictures…
It’s been a whirlwind road trip through 5 states in 2 days, culminating in a wedding in beautiful Carbondale, Colorado. The wedding images will soon follow, but I wanted to post a few pics from the first leg of the trip. The Dakotas were super windy, “Omaha… somewhere in middle America” … very apt lyrics by the Counting Crows, Colorado has been spectacular but hard on the car as I wonder if it’ll die or overheat going up the mountain passes, and hard on me as I wonder if I’m going to die or pass out while hiking in the altitude.
Unlike previous years, the kids have been great driving so far – and I’m talking 12-14 hour days. Now let’s see if we all survive the drive home…
Their wedding is coming up fast, but we still managed to squeeze in an engagement shoot with Cassandra & Chris. It was a very pleasant evening to shoot at the Legislative grounds, and it’s always nice to wander around the grounds at a more relaxed pace than a wedding. Well, I enjoy wandering around at any rate, though I often wonder whether the client is as keen to follow me around on my whimsical quests for interesting light and locations.
That said, Cassandra & Chris seemed more than game and they even brought along their little dog for the shoot. Not only did it not run away or jump all over everyone, but it also politely refused a doggie treat – don’t think I’ve ever seen that before! In the end, we found some interesting light and all three of them photographed beautifully.
