Just married – Allison & Ryan

The second wedding of a double-header weekend, Allison and Ryan managed to secure one of the very few nice days this summer for their wedding. What struck me as I first arrived at Korner Kutz in Stonewall, where Allison and her entourage had taken over the entire salon, was how clear it was the girls were all close friends – from the constant playful banter to the happy snacking on fries from the local greasy spoon, you would have thought it was a pyjama party rather than a bridal party getting ready.

From there, we made our way to Quarry Park and Ryan’s family farm for portraits, and after fighting the rain the previous day in Red Lake, I almost didn’t know what to do with all the sun we had! The day finished up at the St-Boniface Country Club, with a lovely outdoor ceremony which included a little buzzing group of super-cute flower girls.  A beautiful day and a great wedding party to work with – congrats Allison & Ryan!  And now for some sneak peeks…

Julie & Devin – Photobooth

I’ve been meaning to try a photobooth at a wedding reception for awhile now, and finally had the chance to do one at Julie & Devin’s wedding.  I love shooting candids as much as anyone, but even I was surprised at how much fun I had shooting these shots!  Not only will Julie and Devin get really nice shots for their guestbook, but they’ll also get a collection of crazy and fun shots of their guests that you don’t often get.  I was suitably impressed at the creativity shown by a lot of the guests!  The rest of the images from their wedding will follow, but here are a few of my favorites from the photobooth:

Canadian Ultimate Frisbee Championships

I’m a big fan of Ultimate Frisbee and with the Canadian championships taking place in Winnipeg this weekend, I was pumped to be involved in the photography coverage.  With all the rain we’ve gotten the past while, it made for really humid and mucky conditions – this clearly showed up on the players as they made all-out plays over and over again.  The level of frisbee was impressive, humbling, and inspiring all at the same time.

I was lucky enough that the games I covered on Friday were rain-free.  I was at a wedding and wasn’t able to cover/watch any of the games today, but I’m guessing the spectators and players weren’t quite so lucky today.  Hopefully things worked out in spite of the downpour we got this afternoon.  There were a lot of inquiring eyes as people watched the photographers wander around with big honking lenses, but the most common comments I received were on my wise choice of footwear: rainboots.  Not the most agile of footwear, but at least I got to slog around with dry feet all day.    The finals take place Sunday at CanadInn Stadium – details can be found at the CUC site: http://www.canadianultimate.com/cuc/2009/.   It’s a beautiful game to watch at this level, and I highly recommend anyone with a free Sunday to go check out some amazing frisbee for $5.  Among some of my favorite pics:

Melanie & Morgan – married at Red Lake, Ontario

For the first of a double-header wedding weekend, we drove out to Red Lake, Ontario, which is about 3 hours North of Kenora.  It was a pretty drive through Canadian shield country – rocks, lakes, boreal forest.  But just as we rolled into town, Mother Nature decided to turn on the taps and in no time at all there were rivers running down the street in front of our motel.  The forecast for the wedding day was pretty grim too, so it made for some anxious sky watching on Saturday morning.

And though we got rained on no less than 5 different times that day, we still managed to get out and get the pictures done – some against some pretty awesome skies.  Melanie and Morgan are both avid outdoor enthusiasts, so it was great that we were able to capture some of the outdoors despite the downpour.  It was my first time to Red Lake, Ontario, and it was a first time for a lot of things for me – a bride with hot red shoes, the groom & best man cracking out their fishing rods in the middle of a shoot, hitting the bowling lanes for a few shots, a rainbow appearing just in time over the gold mine… Melanie and Morgan bravely faced the weather and were among the nicest and warmest people to work with.  While I hope they’re enjoying their time away on their sunny honeymoon, here are a sneak peeks:

Married – Cassandra & Chris

Chris and Cassandra were just in front of my camera a few weeks back for their engagement photos, so it was an easy transition to start shooting their wedding.  It was the third East Indian wedding I had shot this summer, but this one (like the others) definitely had its own unique feel and it was an interesting to observe and capture the subtle differences in the customs and details.  The ceremony took place under a canopy that Cassandra’s father had built himself, and offered a lot of great moments: Chris gamely making his way through the traditions for the first time… the parents clearly enjoying and feeling the moment… what I thought was an unreal amount of rice they poured on each other’s heads…

Once again Cassandra and Chris gamely followed me around in my whimsical hunt for pictures, and though the day started with a few nerves, the photo session went smoothly and by the time the ceremony and reception had rolled around, everyone was right into the swing of things.  Congratulations you guys!  A few sneak peeks:
