Here’s a fun little session with Chris and Marlese and their three little ones out at the park one bright and sunny morning. I remember when Marlese and I used to chase after all the little ones in the nursery at church, and now here she was now chasing after her own little ragamuffins – all of them bright blonde and full of zing! I’m impressed with how well she and Chris can keep up with them. Little Norah was just a gem – a real character in front of the lens.

It’s one of my favorite places to shoot, with its many different backdrops and spaces to use. Once again, however, as I pulled up to meet Anupa and Vishal and was greeted with throngs of people and booming live music, it occurred to me that I should check out what’s happening at the Forks before just plopping down for a shoot! That said, it was a beautiful sunny day (rather a treat given their rarity this spring) and we managed to slip between most of the crowds and events to get our shots in. And with their fun and effortless interaction with each other, Anupa and Vishal made it easy to catch some great shots.

Here is the second night of a two night shoot for the Artist Next Door Series. I’d never been to the Graffiti Gallery before, and like many inner city gems, was surprised as we pulled up along an emptier stretch of Higgins Avenue to find a warehouse full of art. This show featured a variety of local artists, including handmade postcard-maker Becky Thiessen, story-teller Hannah Godfrey, painter Arlea Ashcroft, photo/video designer Tyler Funk, and was headlined by a performance by singer/songwriter Don Amero.
As always, I love playing with light. The warehouse space was surprisingly large and was lit mostly by fluorescents, so I purposely set up my flashes to overpower the ambient light and create some more interesting directional light. And with the display of paintings in the background, it made for some pretty neat and colourful backgrounds.

Go Canada! That was a most satisfying way to cap off the Olympic games. And now that that’s over, it’s time to catch up on some of these shoots.
This particular one was about, oh, 5 years in the making. Living on the same block, I can’t remember the number of times we’d talked about doing a shoot – while passing each other shoveling our walks, or mowing our lawns, or picking our kids up after a play date at the other’s house. Well the stars finally aligned and Christina, Anya, Big Thomas, Little Thomas, and I managed to make it down to the studio together. Each of them is such a distinct personality and hopefully I was able to capture some of that…
Kerry and Lawrence were one of my 2008 couples and shortly after their wedding, they transplanted out to Alberta so Lawrence could complete his medical residency. When Kerry came back this time for a visit, she left Lawrence behind but instead brought along their new little addition to the family: Sophie. They came down to the studio and we did a nice little mother + daughter + grandfather shoot. Sophie got to model a couple of different outfits and hats – Kerry’s father referred to them as tea cosies but I thought Sophie pulled them off quite nicely, especially my favorite which was the knitted pink one. There were some very nice “real” moments in this shoot – I’ve posted a few of them below:
